How I accidentally started programming again

Three years ago, I was fresh out of college with an engineering degree and experience-in petroleum-that didn’t have much market value back in my hometown. So I did what I have always done, I started looking for problems to solve and people to help.

Where did you start?

At this point, the only experience I had with programming was with Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) in Excel. During my undergrad, I had a professor that pushed us strongly to learn this language because it allowed us to use Excel and programming for data analysis. It also-unbeknownst to me at the time-exposed us all to Software Development.

What happened next?

Aside from group projects, nothing really came from that experience until after I graduated. My experience with VBA helped me get a position in Information Technology as a Database Programmer/Analyst.

Some thoughts

You really don’t know how things are going to end up until they end up. Programming again by accident has been a fun ride and it reminded me of one thing. It does not matter where you start, what matters is that you START.
